The Angry Ones (Old School Books) Review

The Angry Ones (Old School Books) Overview

A powerful story of the hidden and unacknowledged racism that faces an uneducated black man in the professional world and the painful truths that warp interracial sex, The Angry Ones strips away the facade of hypocrisy and condescension from a lliberal and superficially hip society.

The Angry Ones (Old School Books) Specifications

Based on the author's own experiences as the publicity director for a vanity press, The Angry Ones chronicles the hidden and unacknowledged racism that he faced as an educated black man in the professional world. First published in 1960, this book stripped the facade of hypocrisy and condescension that was pervasive in the liberal, superficially hip societal circles of the era. Williams went on to have one of the most important postwar literary careers in the country, which included the publication of his classic 1967 bestseller, The Man Who Cried I Am.

The Book of Ezekiel (Hebrew) (Hebrew Edition)

The Book of Ezekiel (Hebrew) (Hebrew Edition) Review

The Book of Ezekiel (Hebrew) (Hebrew Edition) Overview

The base text of the edition reproduces the Aleppo Codex, the most important representative of the Tiberian masoretic text of the Ben Asher tradition. Underneath the text, four apparata of variant readings culled from various textual witnesses are presented: (I) the ancient Versions the Greek Septuagint, the Latin Vulgate, the Aramaic Targum Jonathan, and the Syriac Peshitta; (II) the extant fragments of scrolls from the Judaean Desert and biblical quotations found in rabbinic literature; (III) select Genizah fragments and 'extra-masoretic' Hebrew medieval manuscripts; (IV) various Hebrew manuscripts representing the development of the masoretic text up to Ben Hayyim's Biblica Rabbinica of 1514-5.

Ecclesiastes: An Introduction and Commentary (Tyndale Old Testament Commentaries)

Ecclesiastes: An Introduction and Commentary (Tyndale Old Testament Commentaries) Review

This commentary is thorough in its brevity. The nature of Ecclesiastes is in trying to understand the point of the book. I think this can be done with a thorough reading of it; as a complement to the study, Eaton does a fine job in explicating the text. I think his introduction is very good, even though in some areas I would depart from him. The strength of Eaton, in my view, is that he mentions some various views, but does not dwell on them - he stays with the text.

Ecclesiastes: An Introduction and Commentary (Tyndale Old Testament Commentaries) Overview

"If it needs a man who has suffered to write a commentary on Job . . . . Perhaps the only person entitled to comment on Ecclesiastes is a cynic who has revolted from the world in disillusionment and disgust." "If so," writes Michael Eaton, "I qualify."Scholars have long wrestled with the gloomy pessimism and striking omission of any mention of Yahweh in this portion of the Wisdom literature. After setting forth the issues related to the text, authorship, date and canonicity, Eaton assesses the purpose and structure of the book. He then provides a passage-by-passage analysis that attempts to account for the oddities of the text and to show its contemporary relevance.

Annie and the Old One

Annie and the Old One Review

Okay...is anyone else tired of little kids who think they have the key to masterful picture book-making. Well, I know that I am. I read these reviews, obviously written by children and find myself so extremely disgusted that I almost gag. Okay, maybe I don't gag, but...

For example the review that stated, word-for-word, "This book had a very thin plot. You pretty much always knew what was going to happen next. Some people may like this book, and others may not. I didn't like this book." You can tell the reviewer is under the age of ten, perhaps seven. And for the 'thin plot' argument, did you actually read 'Annie'. The writting was so beautiful, the plot layered, the almost-unrecognized symbolism (from the text: "The sun rose, but it also set. The cactus did not bloom forever. Petels dried and fell to the earth")--what's not to like!

Now, for the second grade class. Uhhh, have you guys ever thought that maybe this book wasn't intended for you. I read this book as a thirteen year old, a year ago, and recently reread it. I too, thought the story was mediocre at best and pondered on why it won a Newbery Honor. Now at a mature fourteen, I ponder no more. As I stated above, the book may not be for someone under thirteen. But once you hit the big 1-3, go out and buy Annie and the Old One. It won't dissapoint.

Oh, and note the beautiful illustrations by Caldecott Honoree Peter Parnall.

R, your friendly neighborhood reviewer.

This Strange, Old World and Other Book Reviews by Katherine Anne Porter

This Strange, Old World and Other Book Reviews by Katherine Anne Porter Review

The writing of Katherine Anne Porter has slipped out of literary fashion these days -- her sharply-drawn observations and difficult, flawed characters aren't the easy stuff of today's contemporary fiction. Her one major novel, "Ship of Fools," was published more than 60 years ago. Her short stories are seldom anthologized, but they are gems of beauty and precision. This collection of published reviews shows Miss Porter, not surprisingly, was just as conscientious and thoughtful about the craft of her fellow authors as she was of her own writing.

Although most of the books Miss Porter reviewed were not major works, their issues were of obvious interest to her as a writer: history, travel, culture (especially of Mexico), independent women discovering their social and economic equality in American society.

It's a rare treat to read criticism that enhances and illuminates its subjects with such grace and style. There are nice touches of wit, too, without being cruel, even with authors that may undoubtedly deserve it. "Utopias are steadily on the decline," Miss Porter comments on one author's conclusion that the solution to the rise of feminist ideas is a return to "good, old-fashioned, romantic, hearty masculinity." She finds an equal target in Catherine the Great of Russia: "Female despots in the making do not suffer from a mother fixation," she writes in a witty review emphasizing Catherine's political -- and marriage -- ambitions.

These brief reviews, written mainly on deadline, still echo the finely crafted style of Miss Porter's short stories. They also require the reader to read between the lines; much is implied. But they manage to be entertaining and worthwhile, years later, and anyone interested in Katherine Anne Porter should not miss reading them.

This Strange, Old World and Other Book Reviews by Katherine Anne Porter Overview

Between 1920 and 1958 Katherine Anne Porter published more than sixty-five book review, many of which are now largely inaccessible. Although several such pieces have appeared in earlier collections of Porter's nonfiction writings, never have so many of Porter's reviews--nearly fifty--been made available in a single volume. Collectively the review reveal Porter's opinions on topics ranging from the nature of art and the place of the artist in politics and society to feminism and the role of female artists. Particularly evident in the reviews are the critical principles that guided her own work as well as her judgments of the works of other writers.

In her introductory essay Darlene Harbour Unrue provides important biographical information on Porter, traces her career as a reviewer, and links critical assumptions in the reviews to the themes and techniques of Porter's fiction. Other scholars as well have regarded Porter's critical reviews as valuable tools both for analyzing the fiction and for constructing a portrait of Porter the artist, primarily because Porter produced so little fiction (three collections of short stories and novellas, Flowering Judas, The Leaning Tower, and Pale Horse, Pale Rider, and a novel, Ship of Fools). In the preface to the first collection of her nonfiction writings, The Days Before, Porter herself urged readers to look closely at her nonfiction, for there they would discover "the shape, direction, and connective tissue of a continuous, central interest and preoccupation of a lifetime."

Most of the reviews--which appeared in such publications as the New York Herald Tribune, the New York Times, the Nation, and New Masses--she apparently undertook for financial reasons, but occasionally she would agree to review a friend's latest offering. She published no reviews after the success of her best-selling novel, Ship of Fools.

Porter's scope as a reviewer was impressively broad. Because she lived in Mexico City during the revolution, had known Diego Rivera, and had studied "primitive" Mexican art, she was often called on to review books on Mexican art and on the revolution. Porter also reviewed many books by or about women. Her reviews of the Short Novels of Colette and Katharine Anthony's translation of Catherine the Great's memoirs are particularly noteworthy for her comments about women artists and her expression of admiration for women who flout traditional roles.

These collected reviews illustrate the evolution of one of the most important American writers of the twentieth century and will interest not only Porter scholars but also anyone who appreciates her fiction.

The Book of Genesis Illustrated by R. Crumb

The Book of Genesis Illustrated by R. Crumb Review

R. Crumb finally got around to doing what he was put on this earth to do: namely, implement his bold and bawdy style of cartooning in the service of telling the ancient "origins" stories recorded in Genesis. Be sure to read the introduction because there you'll learn of Crumb's intentions and interpretive method. Most remarkable is Crumb's commitment to the original text--the reader will find no Cecil B. Demille-style interpolations or Eugene Peterson-style paraphrasings here. No, Crumb's artistic license comes in the illustrations themselves--with impressive results. Crumb's efforts here make for good "lay" reading, as well as a pretty good textbook for an Introduction to Biblical Studies class. On the other hand, the images that illustrate texts like Genesis 19:31-36 (Lot and his daughters) ought to make it clear that Crumb's work is not the kind of art you want to show to the kids in your Sunday School class.

The Book of Genesis Illustrated by R. Crumb Overview

Nominated for three 2010 Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards: From Creation to the death of Joseph, here are all 50 chapters of the Book of Genesis, revealingly illustrated as never before. Envisioning the first book of the bible like no one before him, R. Crumb, the legendary illustrator, reveals here the story of Genesis in a profoundly honest and deeply moving way. Originally thinking that we would do a take off of Adam and Eve, Crumb became so fascinated by the Bible’s language, “a text so great and so strange that it lends itself readily to graphic depictions,” that he decided instead to do a literal interpretation using the text word for word in a version primarily assembled from the translations of Robert Alter and the King James bible.

Now, readers of every persuasion—Crumb fans, comic book lovers, and believers—can gain astonishing new insights from these harrowing, tragic, and even juicy stories. Crumb’s Book of Genesis reintroduces us to the bountiful tree lined garden of Adam and Eve, the massive ark of Noah with beasts of every kind, the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah destroyed by brimstone and fire that rained from the heavens, and the Egypt of the Pharaoh, where Joseph’s embalmed body is carried in a coffin, in a scene as elegiac as any in Genesis. Using clues from the text and peeling away the theological and scholarly interpretation that have often obscured the Bible’s most dramatic stories, Crumb fleshes out a parade of Biblical originals: from the serpent in Eden, the humanoid reptile appearing like an alien out of a science fiction movie, to Jacob, a “kind’ve depressed guy who doesn’t strike you as physically courageous,” and his bother, Esau, “a rough and kick ass guy,” to Abraham’s wife Sarah, more fetching than most woman at 90, to God himself, “a standard Charlton Heston-like figure with long white hair and a flowing beard.”

As Crumb writes in his introduction, “the stories of these people, the Hebrews, were something more than just stories. They were the foundation, the source, in writing of religious and political power, handed down by God himself.” Crumb’s Book of Genesis, the culmination of 5 years of painstaking work, is a tapestry of masterly detail and storytelling which celebrates the astonishing diversity of the one of our greatest artistic geniuses.

Nominated for three 2010 Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards: Best Adaptation from Another Work, Best Graphic Album, Best Writer/Artist. .
